Just finished up another tucson tuesday night fun ride.
Rode the streets on the single speed for a few hours.
This week s ride was so much better.
My left leg is feeling better. I may try a run in a few more days.

Singletrack for the Single Speed
Rode for maybe 30 minutes or so hammering pretty hard on the single sp-eed.
Well I got 3 graveyard shifts in the next 3 days.
I will be running again soon...I hope
I walk fine now, once again the bike helped me rehabilitate.
I think instead of long runs for a while I may ride for a few hours and then run. Instead of the constant pounding of a long run.
I will be picking back up on the sets too.
I think my training for Hillsboro ghost town38.5 can start back up Novmber.

Convert
Friday 10/26/07- I converted my old dual slalom bike into a single speed.
Tossed a semi slick on the rear and took it out for a test ride.
I rode around for about 3 hours. Everything came out good. Even the chain length came out just right.
My hip is still a bit sore. Still probably not the best idea for me to try and run just yet.

slam
wed-afterwork I went out to fantasy island to ride some single track.
I took a nasty slam, ended up laying my bike out flat and catching the handlebars with my thigh.
Falls from 6 feet in the air usually end up bad for me. I launched off a big hip, one I've hit many times, just not in a few months. Apparently the monsoons have shifted things. As I eyeballed my landing zone from the air( one cannot see the landing from the other side of the hip).
I soon realised I was going to wind up wrapped in a tree. Eww that could be REALLY bad so I layed my bike out and ended up getting flipped undeneath it. I got the wind knocked out of me and ended up stunned for 2 or 3 minutes.
Rode for 1 hour and 1 second! :) I stayed in the big chain ring most of the time too.

does it count? does it matter?
I was told about a tucson tuesday night ride leaving from campus(think critical mass). It was a mellow fun ride that anyone could have probably done. The ride lasted 2 hours and concluded with a game of footdown.
If I'm off on a tuesday night again I will do this. Theres just so many people and its so fun.

gimpy
Monday 10/22/07-I went for a ride out at Saguaro east. I rode the loop and the north to south cactus trail and then back out over to the picnic area hammering the hills a couple times.
Later I went to the gym and bouldered a bit.
All in all my leg still hurts but my hip feels better. No running for a while, not when walking is still tough.

Men
So Saturday 10/20/07 After work C-lo and I decided to turn a couple miles over @ reid park.
I felt stiff so we stretched and hit starting off slow til we warmed up.
Well we turned the first mile Fast, under 6minutes! After 10minutes we took a one minute walk break. My hip started to get tight and then my whole left side got stiff...Well we kept going and were approaching the end and our last walk break. We could have skipped it and finished in 20 minutes easy but we didnt. @ this point my whole left side locked out and became very painful and my leg and hip would no longer bend. Well we finished out strong anyway,
3 miles in 22minutes 38seconds71hundredths, 10 minutes run 1 minute walk( 2 one minute walk breaks).
averaged out to about 7minute30second miles.
Other then my left side from the hip down I felt awesome.
REFLECTION- During our run, toward the end, c-lo and I had a brief conversation about ego.
He mentioned we could stop if I hurt, I said no way, he mentioned stubborness and the male ego.
I felt it was just me accepting all the hard training I've put in to this running/life thing and understanding it is painful.
C-lo has never ran over 6 miles @ one time so its a tough call.
So on the drive home I began to think-
From a very early age I was taught that a man works through pain and adversity.
Anything worth doing was earned and anything really good was never easy and was usually painful. Also a real man wasnt afraid or ashamed to admit he hurt but didnt let it stop him and didnt let it rule him and certainly didnt complain about it. Simply acknowledge it as another part of the process of working through to get to your end goal.
I was conditioned @ an early age to be tough.
Well the problem I run into is when is enough enough. As I've grown up I met climbers who taught me I had to listen to my body. I get overuse and over training injuries because I push very hard.
My climbing buddies taught me to back off and relax. I've torn tendons in both hands torn the major muscle group that runs from my back/shoulder up into my neck all from climbing. All from thinking I had to push and push to be really great @ something.
So the question is am I repeating the same mistakes over and over? Am I doing it again with running? Was I essentially taught wrong as a child or did I just interperete the lessons differently?
I was told sure signs of overtraining are a decrease in performance, being tired, feeeling sick.
I'm not, I have been getting faster.
What will it hurt if I take a break? I dont feel fufilled if I dont excercise @ least 5 or six days a week for @ least an hour plus a day. For me its part of my routine kinda like eating or showering.
I think I'll switch back to Yoga and perhaps ride my bike for a few days.
Nothing does it like running except maybe climbing. Tough to climb in the middle of the night!
These things have a way of working themselves out. On my last long run my hip felt bad toward the end...

This side of brightness/understanding in a car crash
10/17/07-wed-went up to Sabino. Decided to put the sandals to one more test. Ran up phone line link to Blacketts. Ran Blacketts to the end of the trail. On the way down I saw another runner. This was the first time I've ever been passed on this trail and this guy was jammin. So after Blacketts I ran Phone line out to the end of the road. As I was coming down to the road I had to start using the headlamp. I had to go very slow down to the road. So I was snacking on pretzels and I had one margarita shot block that found its way to the bottom of my pretzel bag. It was delicious. Then I popped an apple hammer gel.
So I headed down the road and started getting spastic/paranoid. I'm not sure if it was the sleep deprivation or all the stacked mileage and work over the last couple days. I was having trouble seeing and was getting nervous about cats. So I slowed down and I started to break down and completely come apart. I could have finished this faster then I did but wanted to drag out the pain a little. I started limping and my whole mood and everything just went to hell. It was really fascinating I feel like I learned a lot and was able to focus on certain things I need to work through.-
total run time 3 hours3minutes04seconds.
Normally I would do sets and hit the gym, well more of my family has decided to move to Tucson and they got in tonight so I decided to skip the sets and gym and spend some down time with the Fam.

Lucky wishbone
10/16/07-Tuesday-So I got off work, got home and was ready to run. Out the door by 6pm heading toward saguaro east. Was planning on running out and back , 13 miles total.
Well my mom showed up about 5 minutes from the park and paced me out in the truck.
I wisely took a ride back from the park.
Considering I have to be awake @ 3am to work by 4am I think I made the right decision.
I was running slowly ta boot, about 10:30min miles. Thats including 10 minutes running 1 minute walking.
So 6.5 miles 1hour 8 minutes17 seconds. I didnt push .
Ooh ooooh and I saw a huge pack of female runners, it was so cool I never see anyone out on the path @ night.
Well I get off work EARLY tommorrow so I'M thinking long slow run(4 hours) and climbing gym and sets.

running oddity
Sunday 10/14/07-Headed out to
Sabino. Wow I rarely get to have the weekends off and was a bit suprised at how many people were in the lot.I intended to test out my bite sandals on a trail. I left a pair of road shoes in the jeep just in case. I headed over and out to phone line link. The sandals were working better then they did on pavement. How weird. Well after a bit the trail starts to climb. What do you know the sandals work even better running up!In fact on the flat stuff they feel almost unpredictable compared to uphill. The push I get is just rad.
I kept heading up and passed the junction to Blacketts.
I've heard rumors that all of Phone line and Sabino were now both open. I was itching to check it out.
Sure enough the trails are open and the work that was done is awesome! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
Onward I went, I passed some people way up there and got some REALLY strange looks, huh? Well I just kept truckn. I have never had the chance to run this trail so far because it's always been closed.
Well I reached a couple junctions and decided to keep going until I could drop down and pick up the road. It took me an hour and 16 minutes to reach the road from the start. Well I decided to run the road back, I thought I had family plans later so I wanted to hurry up.
Ok so I emerged onto the road basically coming out of the mountain above and was greeted with more strange looks. There were actually people on the road too. I couldnt figure out what was wrong until I blew by a couple more people also headed down.
It finally dawned on me!
1- I was running in my Tahoe racing singlet,(it's bright bright blue)
2-I have a Huge set of tatoos on my chest which are very visible when I wear a singlet.
3-Uhh Duuh I was running, not jogging, running in sandals!
4- The topper- it's the weekend-there was tons of people out and Im not really used to seeing anyone.
I got down the road in 30 minutes easy. @ least I had my sunglasses on to hide my embarrassment. Oh well I'm comfortable with my dorkiness. :)
Total run time-1hour46minutes52seconds
Embarrasing my self silly in public-priceless.

Shoe review Shoe review
Friday 10/12/07- So on Monday I ordered some Bite running sandals.
Ever since Tahoe my feet have been swollen. In addition I may or may not have caused stress fractures in the toes of my left foot. When I was young (13) I jumped out of a 3 story window and shattered all the bones in my left foot. Well I may be experiencing little problems with those bones now brought on by the ultra.
Review of Bite sandals
Ok so on to the review-Well I wore my injinji socks with the sandals and headed out for the U of A. They worked pretty damn good at first. I noticed right away that my legs and shins had to work a little extra. My feet and toes feel great! After ten minutes I had to readjust the straps.
Comfortable, but can feel new leg muscles being used, akin to running barefoot in the sand for awhile. The sandal allows your toes to spread and the push off they give you is pretty rad even when I was just taking shuffle steps. These things want to be ran in.
So I ran for 30 minutes total.
I began having problems with my left foot(the bad foot). My left foot is smaller, I found myself unable to torque my left sandal strap down tight enough. Apparently my left foot supinates a little as well which causes it to slide forward and sideways in the sandal. I think I just need to break these in all the way.
Ok overall -Too soon to make a decision.
Thus far I think they will become excellent trainers if I alternate them in once or twice a week to help strengthen my feet also they are really a blast to run in but I really have to let my self relax. Things seemed fine as long as I ran slow 9 or 10 minute miles. When I really started to get into to things and crank out 7 minute miles the left sandal would shift a little. I think this will just require me getting used to it. They really like to run and fast. Its weird how much pop these sandals have.
A couple warnings- unlike shoes there is No roll control so your feet kind of do what they want.
At first I thought I was aggrivating my shin splints then relised that I was using different muscles in order to stabilize my feet and body in the sandals. Good form is a priorty with these.
I CANNOT recomend these to anyone, they are very quirky.
I don't know if I could run trails in these but will soon find out.
I wish my left foot/sandal was like my right. The only problems I have with these sandals stem from my preexisting bad left foot.
The bright side- I can tell they are making my feet strong.
They give my toes a break :)
They are a nice change.
I'm sure I will get used to them. My bones in my toes feel so much better.
Ok so total- 30 minute run at the U of A
and then 45 minutes bouldering @ the climbing gym
and then another 30 minutes running after the gym.

10/11/o07-Went up to Babaat duat trail and ran for 1hr10min18sec. On the way up trail I ran 10 min and walked 1 min. For whatever reason I actually ran slower down hill . I think its cause the trail is pretty techcy and a little tougher to follow on the way out. Broke in the new shoes, not bad at all.
Before I left for Tahoe my uncle gave me some new balance 810's. They are a bit big but my feet tend to swell so they fit pretty good. They're brand new and I needed some new trail shoes. He wore them twice, they bother his feet. They havent even molded to anyones feet yet. My only complaint is they flex from left to right a little bit weird.
The plus side is they are neutral and are squishy.

I do not understand
So tuesday 10-09-07-afterwork a little past 12am I decided to go for a run. I guess standing on my feet for 11 hours just wasn't enough.
I again headed out 22nd to spanish trail rd. This time when I hit the park I turned around. I came out way way way to fast. I'm still running for 10minutes then walking for one. I was getting a little paranoid about mountain lions once I hit the city limits. I found it a little difficlut to focus at that point. All in all, awesome run.
Tough not to be disapointed with my total time. I felt much faster then this, then again I know I killed my time when I started looking behind me every 5 seconds. I do like this route because it is hilly in both directions.
total time 2hours00minutes 49seconds-2:00:49-not sure exactly how far this is but for posterity we'll call it 13+
It's funny I don't think I'm good @ anything. But I'm mediocre @ lot's of stuff. Also no matter what I do or how much I achieve it never seems to be enough for me. Ego? I don't compare myself to the achievment of others I compare me to me and I know I am capable of anything. Impossibility only happens in my life when I let it.
Push push push. No excuses, no more rationalizing, Just do it. Shut up and do it. No one is harder on me than myself thats cause I actually believe in myself no matter what. I sound like a self help book.
I've become impossible. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Rambling
Sunday 10/07/07-So after work I ran from my house down 22nd to Old spanish trail. I had arranged a ride to pick me up after about 1:hr30 min or so. Well my ride got a little lost. I ended up running 11 miles not sure of the time maybe a 1:35-1:40. I forgot to stop my watch as I was waiting for my ride. Nice run I really wanted to run this in 1:20 or 1:10.

Ouchy ouchy crunchy crunch
Wed -10/03/07-Afterwork I ran two full laps around the U of A- I erased my split but my time was something like 55 minutes. I'm still running for 10 minutes and speed walking for 1 minute.
Toward the end of my run I had a weird out of body experience, I felt the urge to just keep going and knew I could. I forced myself to stop because I dont want to damage myself. It hasnt even been a week since the triple and I've taken one rest day since.I really want to reap the benefits of all the miles I put in in the last week.

It all comes down to this
Well I had been on vacation for a few days and drove up to Tahoe for my run. After sitting in on the orientation meeting I decided to run the Tahoe triple Marathon. 3 marathons for 3 days straight.
Thursday September 27th- Well I ran my legs off. There was a hill that lasted from mile 20 to 26. We ran from the top of Zephyr cove around the lake to spooner summit. Most people were saying this was as tough as any trail run they had ever done. I ran it in 4hrs36min11sec.
Friday 28th- Not able to eat the night before, a little worried about this day. This leg started at spooner summit and ended in tahoe city. I got sick at mile 20 and ended up walking for days. Finished in 4hrss34min24secs. I just kept running faster.
Sat the 29th the final day and the main marathon- For the first 10 miles we ran in snow and ice. We started from Tahoe city and ran to pope beach. What was neat was we ran with a bunch of other people. The first 2 marathons were only those who were running the triple, about 150 people. The main marathon had a ton of people and at mile 13 the half marathoners join you and at mile 20 the 10kers join you so there was constant new blood. I could go on and on but just dont feeel like it. Finished in 4hrs27min34sec.
I felt that running the triple was much more difficult then running a 50 miler.
Others agreed with me
Out of the 150 runners that originally entered the triple not all finished. I finished 22nd.
I plan on doing this event next year. The first 2 marathons are a little disorganised. It is a real test of yourself and your determination. The trophy and sweatshirt that says survivor and singlet you get for finishing is really cool. When you cross the finish line you get a finisher medal put across your neck. Oh and a license plate holder that says 78.6 miles. The memories are pretty great too. I met and ran with some amazing people.
