Is it bad if it hurts to breathe?

More on the whole breathing thing later. 07/30/07 monday

Ok went to Saguaro east and rode the Cactus forest trail loop. It's 4.5 miles of hilly pavement and 2.5 miles of mellow single track. Then I broke down my mt. bike stored it in the jeep and did a quick change over of about 4-5 minutes into my running gear and reapeated the loop on foot.

So 7-7.

7 on mt bike 7 on foot. The run and ride went well.

Time for block SETS.

ouch

07/29/07 sunday-Well my quads hurt. Like impact hurt, so I figured I better ride today and maybe not run for a bit until my legs are'nt suffering from the impact of running. I've done my fair share of long hard training and am familiar with how much pain training can be but this is different.

So I rode the lone cactus loop out at Fantasy Island. It took about an hour and did'nt bother my legs. I realised I havent rode since my Sedona trip @ the end of may. I have'nt climbed in several weeks either. Perhaps it's time to switch things up.

Riding felt good. It did'nt agitate my legs or knees or anything so maybe I will switch it up for a week.

Squishy

fri 07/27/07 after work I bought some gel insoles from the local running store.
I headed up to Babat Duag. I've only seen this one on the map and it appered to be 2.5 each way. Perfect I was looking for a nice 5 miler.
So I managed to run the whole thing only taking one or two walk steps due to loose rough terrain. Uhh I didnt pay attention to the time just that a big rain cloud was sweeping the valley below me and that I'd better move my ass. I stopped @ the end trail sign, ate a gel, went pee and retied my right shoe. The insoles havent molded yet so I'm kinda squishing all over in my shoe. Seems Better tied tight. The ground was rough anyway. Im a bit sore.

There were big bolts of lightning coming out of that storm cloud. I beat it back to my car before it even reached the base of the mountain.

O yeah I dragged my foot right into a prickly pear cactus. Only one or two spines made it through my shoe and into my foot.

Well I've been putting my sets off all night

I don't wanna take a bath

So I headed out to Sabino leaving myself ample time to hopefully run all of 7 Falls.
I've come close (I think) several times but have turned back short due to lack of light and unfamiliarity of the trail. Well I headed out toward bear canyon and had to make an EMERGENCY potty break so I veered off the trail and onto the road. As I approached the restroom I saw my first desert tortoise! I picked the trail back up and ran it for some time. Much further then the times before. Eventually I came upon a sign that said Bear canyon trail and had 2 arrows but no mileage. From there the trail gradually climbed up and right and another well used but unmarked trail headed left and down into the wash. So I followed the spur trail and ended up at what I'm pretty sure was 7 falls. I explored around a bit and in the water I found a small ribbon like snake swimming. It had vertical yellow dashes running its length(not stripes).
Well after playing a bit and eating some power goo gel junk I headed back. On the spur trail back up I saw a big fat lizard all black with bright orange spots. That sucker was huge, like a good 3 feet or so.

Ok so I headed back and at my first oportunity I took the phone line link up. I soon passed the turn for Blacketts ridge and realised I did'nt have enough time to climb Blacketts.
So I took all the phone links out passed phone line trail itself and down to the picnic area and shuttle stop 2. I kind of stumbled my way down to the road and pointed myself north. Onward and upward. Running the road was nice .I didnt have to lift my legs very high off the ground and just shuffled right along. All the wash crossings were running and I was a bit nervous about running the road with wet feet especially after all the trail running I had already done. With normal socks, soggy shoes, and 6 more miles my feet should have fallen apart. Well the injinji socks did there trick and I have very minimal blistering most of it is from yesterdays road run. Alot of people out hiking the road. I had to drag my self up the last hill to the end of the road...

Not too much long run drama. All in all I fell once on the trail, got real wet in the wash crossings, and made my quads so sore I became a little worried about the stairs leading up to my house.

So I decided to brave the dreaded ice bath. I bought 2 bags on the way home. I DO NOT LIKE COLD WATER. Ok so I prepared the bath and ice etc. Well the water wouldnt run cold so I only had to sit in really cold water for 10 minutes. Afterward I noticed a difference.
I took 800mg of ibuprofen and sat in the spa for 15 minutes or so.

So grand total 3hours 30 minutes and this includes my potty break and playing around @ 7 falls
Next time I want to throw Blacketts into the mix. I drank exactly 60 oz of water all of wich I carried on my person for the whole run and had 2 gels. Tommorow will be sets and a light run

Just Troy? just desert or just desserts?

wed 07/25/07-finally got a day off....Well a a bit of drama going on , jeep problems, finances are being tricky, me being emotionally unstable :) ... So I have friends who are snowbirds and leave their car here when there gone so I borrowed it for the day while the jeep is @ the docters office(mechanic) slowly draining my wallet(gotta pay to play).

Ahh well I needed to give the snowbirds car a run any way, its been sittin a month or so and I had to convince it to start! So Off to Saguaro east. The Rincons!
I haven't been out there since I first moved and only once prior, kinda saving this place for when I get bored with Sabino.

So I got a late start, I headed out on the cactus drive loop @ 6:40pm and tried to really haul ass. The park closes at 7pm and I was bound and determined to run 8 miles. Good thing I parked outside the gate and down the rode a bit. Great run ,I did the whole loop in one direction this time instead of turning around at the half way point. Amazing sunset that lasted forever. All my problems seemed small. It could have been hot, it could have been cold. The small things faded away into the rythm of my feet beating the concrete. Everything became simple...

Run in this direction, climb this hill, left foot, right foot,it was like kindergarten. A few steady climbs, amazing scenery. The sun hanging behind the tucson mountains to the west; lighting the whole panaram like some sort of natural mellow neon. I felt warm inside. I felt good.. The moon slowly made its apperance through the haze hanging over the Rincons and I finished my run.

Total time 80 minutes almost exactly and I started down the road a piece. So I averaged 10 minute miles. The last half of the run was akin to floating on an updraft.

I'm ready for life in this city and.....

...my wings have grown almost enough to lift me.
My name stands for my being and my being stands for the woman who stood and braved the storm to raise the seedling. Brother sun, sister moon, mother beutiful.- Aesop Rock.

)7/23/07 Monday-
My lifes essence encaspulated in the soft glow of a head lamp. That sentence stayed trapped in my brain, not sure where it came from but I dont beleive it's my own- I can only see a short distance ahead; the reflective strips in my shoes shine and flash. Dodging rocks and keeping a lookout for snakes I head down the phoneline link to the picnic area and shuttle stop 2. I just bagged lower sabino to Blacketts ridge. I was hoping to snag the road all the way out . The quick sunset changed my plans and I brought out both my lights.( head lamp and mini hand held).

Dam it was pitch black, I almost stepped on a ton of these tiny frogs all over the road. I also saw a big ol' toad and a tarrantula! Total run time 2hours. Trails were tricky due to the rains. Slick rocks.

As if the run wasn't enough!

My goals are within reach, I'm going to keep this training regimen up heavy for at least 3 months.PRAY FOR SNOW IN AZ. THIS YEAR!!!

A quick thanks to kent for the ed abbey info.

p.s. not sure about the E.A. monument in organ pipe..It's just something I read about in Backpacker magazine several years ago.

Wow so this is life! Trying to cram as much into everywaking moment ,working 10 hour plus days and working 10 days on 2 days off. Running and working out, just building more and more layers of the cake. Or perhaps a really good basefoundation. Ha.

Scary how quickly my moods snap.
